We made a candle that speaks to the buzzing energy of Los Angeles: the city with spice in its veins and a kick in the air. It’s a siren song for thrill-seekers and pleasure-chasers who are willing to risk it all. It’s all things wild and brisk, tingling the nose with a sharp bite, reaching the roof of the mouth, lingering deep with glowing neon green. Highland Park Jalapeño is a bold olfactory ode to our home. It grinds together fresh Coriander Seeds, sun-warmed Thyme, resinous green Galbanum, and ripe Jalapeños bursting with bite.

It’s also a tribute to the grit and grind of this place. You come to LA to be hot. And thrilling. And in this empire of bright, blazing heat, Jalapeños sit at the throne. Its green is the color of our Freeway signs. It’s the old keys to the Chateau Marmont (and the color of the tiles in the bathroom). The Samuel Novarro House by Lloyd Wright has a Jalapeño shell. The city of Oz was a glowing Jalapeño green for Dorothy and her friends to distinguish the magical world of Oz from the mundane, black-and-white world of Kansas. And the Highland Park Theatre (which screened The Wizard of Oz in 1939) glows in green at night.

Smelling Jalapeño releases endorphins: the body’s soothing response to pain, and the same response the body has to exercise. It’s a way of experiencing a bootcamp high without actually going to Barry’s. This candle goes hard for the endorphins: lacing the air with the green burn of a Jalapeño and tickling the nose with a sharp twist of crushed leaves, cold grass, hot pepper, and charred smoke.

Candle Care

When burning your candle for the first time, allow it to burn for 2 to 3 hours, until the top layer of the wax has completely melted. This will prevent the wax from tunneling around the wick. When burning the candle after the first burn, do not let it burn for over 3 hours at a time.

Ideally, we recommend keeping the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch at all times to prevent the candle from emitting smoke or the wick falling into the wax.

After each burn, see that the wick is centered in the wax. This will also ensure that the glass does not overheat. The wick and flame should never be touching the glass. When approaching the end of the candle, leave ¼ inch of wax unburned and ensure you are not burning the candle for more than 3 hours. The glass can get overheated without the presence of wax and break.

Impact

These candles are packaged in boxes with an FSC certification, which means they were made using materials from responsibly managed forests, including some recycled paper products.
